HIPEC – Surgical Treatment

CONTEXT

HIPEC stands for Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy. The surgical treatment of peritoneal metastases has become a promising option for tumors that were previously fatal and did not respond effectively to any treatment. Today, HIPEC is the primary and most effective treatment for advanced tumor lesions affecting the peritoneum.

PROCEDURE

In this treatment, the chemotherapy drug is heated to high concentrations and released into the abdomen at the end of surgery. This procedure allows for greater absorption of the medication by the tumor, destroying a larger number of tumor cells and making the treatment extremely effective.

The goal of HIPEC is to deliver the chemotherapy directly to the tumor cells, unlike systemic chemotherapy, which causes the drug to circulate throughout the entire body.

Procedure

HIPEC procedure for hepatic and peritoneal metastasis of colon cancer.
