Whipple Surgery

CONTEXT

Whipple surgery is performed to remove pancreatic cancer. It is also sometimes used to treat pre-malignant tumors of the head of the pancreas or related structures (Ampulla of Vater, duodenum, or bile duct). Less commonly, it may be used to address pancreatic or duodenal trauma, or chronic pancreatitis.

PROCEDURE

Whipple surgery (duodenopancreatectomy) is a major surgical procedure that involves the removal of the head of the pancreas, the duodenum, part of the bile ducts, the gallbladder, and may include part of the stomach (pylorus) and the jejunum.
